Escaped prisoner robs Post Office 1905

CHARLES Smarth, of Hull, who is charged with stealing a steam launch on the Witham at Boston, and was remanded in custody on Friday, escaped from the hands of the police on Saturday afternoon.

His recapture was effected at Lincoln on Sunday morning.

It appears that after leaving Boston, Smarth managed to reach Tattershall undetected, and during the night he broke into the Post Office, whence he stole some postal orders and a bicycle.

Charles Smarth, alias Cook, fireman, of Hull was sentenced to six months imprisonment at Boston, on August 24. 1905

For the thefts he made during his escape Smarth was committed to Lincoln Assizes where he was sentenced to an additional three months with added hard labour.
