The old
School at Tattershall lies in the heart of a conservation area. It
stands in the shadow of the National Trust Tattershall castle, built in
1445 by Ralph Cromwell, and Holy Trinity Church Tattershall.

Tattershall school and schoolmaster’s house were designed by William
Butterfield, the well-known Victorian architect, between 1860 and 1862.
In ‘The buildings of Lincolnshire' by Nikolaus Pevsner and John Harris,
the school and schoolmaster’s house are mentioned twice. In the
introduction we read ‘in a more domestic vein, relying on bold massing
and picturesque asymmetry, Butterfield’s school at Tattershall (1860-2)
maybe mentioned.’ In the narrative under Tattershall we read, ‘the
building is in red brick with blue brick decoration and stone dressings
to the school, the plain tiled roof with the Butterfield motifs of
half-hipped gable, walls breaking above the eaves to form a dormer and
large, tapering chimneystacks.’
The
school was erected at the ‘expense of the Government and Earl Fortescue
in lieu of the old National School.’ (Kelly’s Directory) The school
was in existence for approximately 120 years, closing in July 1976.
Since closing as a school, this historic building has been used as a
restaurant and also a wedding and couture business. The building is
Grade II listed and is of special historical importance.
