EXTRACTS FROM DOMESDAY BOOK RELATING TO TATTERSHALL AND TATTERSHALL THORPE

In the land of the Bishop of Durham

In Tattershall Thorpe is inland  "Inland : Another way of describing Demesne."  and sokeland of the same manor, 2 carucates  "Carucate : A ploughland;  notionally, the area which could be ploughed with an eight-ox team -  used in the north and east as a unit of assessment to tax instead of the Hide."  of land to the geld  "Geld : TheEnglish land tax assessed in the Hide." .  There is land for 2 ploughs.  16 villans  "Villans : A peasant of higher economic status than a bordar, and living in a village, notionally unfree because subject to the manorial court."  and 1 sokeman  and 4 bordars   have l plough there, and the third part of 2 mills, rendering 8s., and 3 fisheries rendering 7s 6d and there are 15 acres of meadow and 120 acres of woodland pasture.  Eudo claims it.

In Tattershall Thorpe is land in lordship (a home farm) and  land belonging to the same manor, 2 areas of ploughland  which is taxable.  There is land for 2 ploughs. 16 freemen and 1 freeman who owes service, and 4 peasants have 1 plough there, and the third part of 2 mills, rendering 8s. and 3 fisheries rendering 7s 6d and there are 15 acres of meadow and 120 acres of woodland pasture.  Eudo claims it.

Wraggoe Wapentake

In Tattershall Thorpe. Godderine and Gunnhvati had 5 bovates   of land and the third part of 1 bovate to the geld .  There is land for 6 oxen.  The Bishop has 1 plough there, and 5 villans   and 1 bordar with 1 plough, and the fourth part of a mill rendering 12d and 1 ½  fisheries rendering 3s, and the third part of a church, and 8 acres of meadow, and 46 acres of woodland pasture.  TRE  worth £3; now 33s 4d.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Godderine and Gunnhvati had 5 one-eighth pieces of ploughland and the third part of l one-eighth  piece of ploughland to the geld.  There is land for 6 oxen.  The Bishop has 1 plough there and 5 freemen and l peasant with 1 plough, and the fourth part of a mill rendering 12d and 1 ½ fisheries rendering 3s, and the third part of a church and 8 acres of meadow, and 46 acres of woodland pasture.  In the time of King Edward worth £3, now 33s.4d.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Wulfmaer had 2 carucates  of land to the geld  as a manor.  There is land for 2 ploughs.  There are 18 villans   and 4 bordars  with 1 plough and 16 acres of meadow, and 120 acres of woodland pasture, and the third part of 2 mills rendering 7s. and 3 fisheries rendering 30d.  It was and is worth 20s.  Eudo holds it of the King.  3 sokemen and 2 bordars have 1 plough there, and 12 acres of meadow, and 12 acres of woodland pasture, and 40 acres of scrubland.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Godwine and Gunnhvate had 2 caracutes of land to the geld  .  There is land for 2 ploughs.  Now there are 2 ploughs in demesne  , and 16 villans  and 4 bordars   have 2 ploughs  There is a church and 4 ½ fisheries rendering 10s. and the third part of 2 mills rendering 7s. and 24 acres of meadow and 140 acres of woodland pasture.  TRE  , as now, worth 100s.  Of this mill the Bishop of Durham has the third part, Eudo two parts.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Godwine and Gunnhvati had 2 areas of ploughland which are taxable.  There is land for 2 ploughs.  Now there are 2 ploughs in the Home Farm, and 16 freemen and 4 peasants have 2 ploughs.  There is a church and 4 ½ fisheries rendering 10s. and the third part of 2 mills rendering 7s. and 24 acres of meadow and 140 acres of woodland pasture.  In the time of King Edward, as now, worth 100s.  Of this mill, the Bishop of Durham has the third part, Eudo two parts. 

Candleshoe Wapentake

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Godwine and Gunnhvati had 10 bovates  of land and 2 parts of 1 bovate to the geld .  There is land for as many oxen.  Eudo has 1 plough there; and 10 villans and 2 bordars   with 1 plough.  He has two parts of a church there and the fourth part of 2 mills, rendering 6s. and 3 fisheries rendering 6s 8d. and 16 acres of meadow and 100 acres, less 8, of woodland pasture.  TRE   worth £6, now 66s. 8d.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Godwine and Gunnhvati had 10 one-eighth parts of ploughland and 2 parts of a further one-eighth part of ploughland which is taxable.  There is land for as many oxen.  Eudo has 1 plough there;  and 10 freemen and 2 peasants with 1 plough.   He has two parts of a church there and the fourth part of 2 mills, rendering 6s. and 3 fisheries rendering 6s 8d. and 16 acres of meadow and 100 acres, less 8, of woodland pasture.  In the time of King Edward worth £6; now 66s 8d. 

North Riding – Bolingbroke Wapentake

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Wulfmaer had 2 caracutes  of land to the geld .  There is land for 2 ploughs which are there, with 18 villans  and 4 bordars .  It is worth 20s.

In Tattershall Thorpe.  Wulfmaer had 2 ploughlands of taxable land.  There is land for 2 ploughs which are there, with 18 freemen and 4 peasants.  It is worth 20s. 

In Skirbeck Quarter.  2 bovates: TheEnglish land tax assessed in the Hide." .  There is land for 1 ox.  8 villans  have 1 plough there.  It is sokeland of Tattershall.

In Skirbeck Quarter.  2 areas of ploughland  which are taxable.  There is land for 1 ox.  8 villans have 1 plough there.  It is appurtenant to Tattershall

The Land of Svortbrandr and other Thegns

Re:  Dispute between Bishop of Durham and Eudo fitzSpirewic.

Touching the soke of 6 bovates  about which there is a dispute between the Bishop and Eudo, in Langton by Wragby and (?) Tattershall Thorpe (sic), the men of Wraggoe  Wapentake   say that {Harold and Gunthfrith} had the soke TRE   equally and in parage, but that in the year in which Edward died, the sons of Girthfrith had the whole soke, but they know not on what ground they had it, whether by force or by the gift of their uncle.

Touching the home farm land of 6  one-eighth parts of ploughland, about which there is a dispute, between the Bishop and Eudo,  in Langton by Wragby, and (?) Tattershall Thorpe (sic), the men of Wraggoe Wapentake say that {Harold and Gunthfrith}  had the home farm land in the time of King Edward equally and in parage, but that in the year in which Edward died, the sons of Gunthfrith had the whole home farm area, but they know not on what ground they had it, whether by force or by the gift of thekr uncle. 

In Kirkby on Bain, Harold has 10 bovates  of land to the geld ,.  There is land for 13 oxen.  The Bishop of Durham has there 3 villans  and 2 bordars  with half a plough, and there are 12 acres of meadow and 170 acres of woodland, pasture in places.  TRE  worth 100s;  now the same

In Kirkby on Bain. Harold has 10 one-eighth parts of ploughland which is taxable.  There is land for 13 oxen.  The Bishop of Durham has there 3 freemen and 2 peasants with half a plough and there are 12 acres of meadow and 170 acres of woodland, pasture in places.  In the time of King Edward worth 100s;  now the same.
